Memory
12 DIMMs per processor (up to 24 DIMMs in a dual-processor configuration) RDIMMs and LRDIMMs must not be mixed. Mixing of more than two memory module capacities in a system is not supported. A minimum of two CPUs and a minimum of 12x RDIMMs are required for any configurations that support NVDIMM-N. Maximum of 12 NVDIMM-Ns can be installed in a system. The Dell PowerEdge R740xd has 3 Backplanes to choose from. The 24 x 2.5" SAS/SATA/NVMe with a max of 12 NVMe drives allowed. Supports the mid and rear drive trays. The 12 x 3.5" SAS/SATA (HDD/SDD) which supports the mid and rear drive trays. The 24 x (NVMe) which does not support a mid or a rear drive tray.
If you're thinking of having NVDIMM's with a battery. You can only install a 3.5" Mid drive tray or no mid drive tray. The Mid Drive Tray for the 2.5" does not support a NVDIMM battery.
