HPE DL580 Gen9 Base Knowledge

The HPE DL580 Gen9 Rack Server by HPE is a 4U up to 4 Socket system. The DL580 Gen9 holds up to 96 DDR4 DIMMs and 4 PSUs. This system needs at least the following to run.

  • A minimum of two processors are required
  • Can support two, three, or four processors installed.
  • A minimum of two memory cartridges are required (one per processor).
  • A minimum of two memory DIMMs are required per cartridge (minimum of 2 DIMMs per processor).
  • A minimum of two power supplies are required.

The DL580 Gen9 supports the Intel® Xeon® E7-4800/8800v3 and v4 Processor Family. Mixing different processor models is not supported.

Support for 96 DDR4 Registered (RDIMM) or Quad Rank Load Reduced (LRDIMM). LRDIMM and RDIMM are distinct memory technologies and cannot be mixed within a server. The system holds 8 Memory Cartridges and each cartridge can hold up to 12 DIMMs. To install more cartridges, use the HPE DL580 Gen9 12 DDR4 DIMM Slots Memory Cartridge (788360-B21).

  • Maximum Capacity 12TB (96 x 128GB)

New on the DL580 Gen9 server is the protection against memory errors with the HPE Lockstep memory setting. Lockstep mode provides protection against multi-bit memory errors that occur on the same DRAM device. Lockstep mode can correct any single DRAM device failure on x4 and x8 DIMM types. The DIMMs in each channel must have identical HP part numbers.

HPE DL580 Gen9 Maximum Internal Storage
Internal SAS lower and upper backplanes support up to ten SFF hard disk drives or solid-state drives or Express Bays (NVMe drives). To add a drive Bay or to add a second drive bay you will need the HPE ProLiant DL580 5 Small Form Factor Drive Backplane Cage Kit (739405-B21). If you don’t plan to fill all the drive slots. Use the HPE Small Form Factor Hard Drive Blank Kit (666987-B21).

The DL580 Gen9 has very limited Drive configurations. Below are the different drive setups.

  • 5 Drives = 5 SFF HDD/SSD SAS drive bays
  • 10 Drives = 10 SFF HDD/SSD SAS drive bays
  • 10 Drives = 5 SFF NVMe + 5 SFF HDD/SSD drive bays

Dual microSD USB option kit also available (741279-B21).

HPE DL580 Gen9 NVMe Drives
The DL580 Gen9 comes with two Drive Bays. One 5 Drive Bay on the bottom as standard and another 5 Drive Bay on top of the 4 Fans. The NVMe Drives can only be installed on the top drive bay. To support NVMe PCIe SSDs you need to select the SSD Express Bay Kit(788359-B21), maximum of 5 drives supported.

HPE DL580 Gen9 M.2
There was no mention of M.2 drive in any of the Spec sheets.

HPE DL580 Gen9 PCI Risers
HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen9 servers offer a dedicated FlexibleLOM slot, which offers customers a choice of 1Gb, 10Gb, or 10Gb base-T Ethernet or converged networking in their embedded adapter.
PCIe slot availability is dependent on the number of processors installed, view the table below for details. Up to 9 slots supported; all full-length/full-height. All slots support PCIe cards to 150W or more depending on the card but an additional Power Cord Option is required (PN 669777-B21).

HPE DL580 Gen9 Cooling
The DL580 Gen9 comes with 4 Hot Plug Fans (eight rotors with N+1 redundancy) as standard. The only other cooling option you have on the DL580 Gen9 HPE Rack Server is if you install a Graphics Card. If you do install a Graphics Card you will also need the HPE DL580Gen9 M60 Reverse Air Flow Cable Kit (869724-B21).

HPE DL580 Gen9 GPU / Workload Accelerator
Up to 4 cards are supported on the DL580 Gen9. Supporting a multiple number of cards on the DL580 Gen9 blocks some active IO cards as follows due to space constraints:

  • For 2P config: Max of 2 double-wide cards installed on slot 6 and slot 9 (slot 8 is blocked).
  • For 3P config: Max of 3 double-wide cards installed on slot 3, slot 6, and slot 9 (slot 5 and slot 8 are blocked).
  • For 4P config: Max of 4 double wide cards installed on Slot 1, Slot 3, Slot 6, and Slot 9 (slot 5 and slot 8 are blocked).

When installing Graphics Cards you must also install the HPE DL580Gen9 M60 Reverse Air Flow Cable Kit (869724-B21)

HPE DL580 Gen9 Common Slot your power!
A minimum of two (2) power supplies are required. Four (4) 1500W power supplies offers N+Nredundancy for highly loaded configurations. Mixing of power supplies in the same server is not supported. All power supplies must be of the same output and efficiency rating. If non-matched power supplies are inserted you will get errors and the operation will fail.

ECS Warranty Information

Express Computer Systems (ECS) provides a 1 year parts warranty against defects in material or workmanship that will affect the products functionality. All refurbished items are tested prior to shipping to guarantee up-time upon arrival. If you are having issues with an item we provided please Contact Us and we will do our best to assist you.

What does our ECS warranty cover?
We offer 1 year warranty as standard and additional years can be added to fit your needs. Please reach out to a sales associate via the Contact Us page or live chat for more information on extended coverage options. During the coverage period if your product fails we will offer a Next Business Day replacement. If we are unable to replace the product we will refund its original selling price. Shipping costs and tax are not refundable. Express Computer Systems retains the right to decide whether the goods will be replaced or refunded.

What is not covered by our warranty?
Our warranty does not cover any problem caused by the following conditions:

  1. accidents; misuse; carelessness; electrostatic discharge; shock; temperature or humidity beyond the specifications of the product; improper installation; operation; modification;
  2. any improper use that contravenes the instructions in the user manual;
  3. problems caused by other equipment. Our warranty is void if the product is returned with damaged, removed, counterfeit labels, or any modifications (including any component or external cover removal). Our warranties do not cover data loss or damages to any other equipment. In addition, our warranties do not cover incidental damages, consequential damages, or costs related to data recovery, removal, and installation.

Important notes:

  • Please ask for additional warranty/coverage that you may require in addition to the standard 1 ECS warranty prior to final purchase. Requesting additional warranty after your purchase can be denied.
