Base Knowledge
The HPE DL360 Gen9 Supports 2 Processors and 24 DIMMs in total. 12 DIMM slots per processor, 4 channels per processor, 3 DIMMs per channel. The max speed varies based on the processor’s Max Memory Speed. Below are the max capacity for each Memory type.
-
Maximum Capacity (LRDIMM) 3TB (24 x 128GB LRDIMM)
- Maximum Capacity (RDIMM) 768GB (24 x 32GB RDIMM)
- Maximum Capacity (NVDIMM) 128GB (16 x 8GB NVDIMM)
This Rack server has NVDIMM support only with the E5-2600v4 processors, and can only be mixed with RDIMMs. NVDIMMs cannot be used with LRDIMMs and the MAX amount of NVDIMMs is 16 while the rest would need to be RDIMMs.
- 128GB DIMMS cannot be mixed with any other size DIMMs.
- NVDIMMs are only supported on factory-configured servers with E5-2600 v4 processors
This server not only supports NVDIMM’s but it also supports NVMe SSD Drives, up to 6 on the SFF Chassis. You have the choice of 2 different chassis. Then 4LFF (755259-B21) or the 8SFF (755258-B21) Chassis. Below are the Maximum internal Storage amounts.
Maximum Internal Storage
- Hot Plug SFF SAS SSD 153.0TB 10 x 15.3TB
- Hot Plug SFF SATA SSD 76.8TB 10 x 7.68TB
- Hot Plug SFF SAS 20.0TB 10 x 2.0TB
- Hot Plug SFF SATA 20.0TB 10 x 2.0TB
- Hot Plug LFF SAS SSD 6.4TB 4 x 1.6TB
- Hot Plug LFF SATA SSD 15.36TB 4 x 3.84TB
- Hot Plug LFF SAS 48.0TB 4 x 12TB
- Hot Plug LFF SATA 48.0TB 4 x 12TB
- Hot Plug SFF NVMe PCIe SSD 61.44.TB 6 x 7.68TB NVMe + 4 x 3.84TB SFF SSD
Before we move on, let’s chat about the upgradable drive options and what needs to be removed or added. First off, if you have chosen the 4LFF Chassis, you can add the VGA and USB ports to the front of the chassis with the HPE DL360 Gen9 LFF USB/VGA Kit (764638-B21).
If you have the SFF Chassis, you can do a few more things. If you want to upgrade from 8SFF to 10SFF you have 3 options. The configuration can be the following.
- 8SFF SATA/SAS + 2SFF SATA /SAS with kit (764630-B21)
- 8SFF SATA/SAS + 2SFF NVMe with kit (764628-B21)
- 4SFF SATA/SAS + 6SFF NVMe with kit (817676-B21)
These kits are not supported on the 4LFF and can’t be used with the media bay option kit. When adding the extra 2 Drives to the 8SFF Chassis you take over the Media Bay slot.
If you do not want to upgrade the 8SFF to a 10SFF. Then the media bay slot can be configured with one of the following options.
- DVD-RW, USB 2.0 and VGA, use kit (764632-B21) SFF ONLY
- DVD ROM, USB 2.0 and VGA, use kit (818213-B21) SFF ONLY
- USB 2.0 and VGA use kit (764634-B21) SFF ONLY
- USB 2.0 and VGA use kit (764638-B21) LFF ONLY
NVMe Drives
Do you want NVMe drives to speed up your system? You have two choices on the SFF Chassis. The HPE DL360 Gen9 NVMe 2 Solid State Drive Express Bay Enablement Kit (764628-B21). It holds 2 NVMe Drives, not able to be installed with the Media Bay Kit since they take up the same spot. If NVMe drives are installed, you will need the High-Performance Fan Kit (766201-B21). This (764628-B21) card can only be installed in Slot 1 of the primary riser or slot 3 of the secondary riser. The next option for NVMe drives is the HPE DL360 Gen9 6 NVMe + 4 SAS/SATA Express Bay Enablement Kit (817676-B21). This card supports 6 NVMe Drives and is only allowed to be installed in Slot 1 of the primary riser.
M.2
The DL360 HPE Rack Server support M.2 drives on a PCIe adapter. The M.2 drives go in a PCIe slots and use B140i SATA controller only, not supported by the HPE Flexible Smart Arrays.
PCI Risers
This 1U Rack server is tightly designed, so when thinking of the configuration we need to save PCIe slots when we can if necessary. This server supports the Advanced Raid (AR) Smart Array style cards. There are a few unique configurations that can be made for this 1U Rack server. If you plan on installing GPU’s or other PCI devices, I suggest using the H240ar, P440ar or P840ar to save a PCIe slot. If you plan on using 2 GPUs, you MUST install the Smart Array P440ar Controller for 2 GPU Configurations (726740-B21). This controller has a unique heatsink that allows for the 2nd GPU to fit.
Now let’s talk about Riser rules and configurations supported. We have two risers to choose from, the Primary and Secondary risers. Both can be installed at the same time, but when installing the Secondary Riser kit (867249-B21) with the GPU Enablement Kit (867249-B21). Slot 2 of the Primary riser is not supported. This is due to the fact the GPU Enablement kit is for adding two FH GPUs to the system. Another option for the secondary riser is the Low Profile PCIe Slot CPU2 Kit (764642-B21) which provides a PCIe 3.0x16 Low Profile slot.
Riser Configuration Options:
-
1 FH, ¾ length and 2 Low Profile slots
- 2 FH, ¾ length

Cooling
We are going to need some serious cooling if we configure this DL360 Rack Server to a performance level. Here are all the reasons you need to upgrade to the High-Performance Fan Kit, (766201-B21):
-
160W CPUs or higher,
-
Installation of NVMe Drives
-
10SFF Chassis Configuration
-
LRDIMM Configurations
-
ASHRAE-compliant configurations

A high-performance fan kit increases power consumption. To reduce power consumption, use a high-performance heatsink (795235-B21).
When installing the second Processor, 2 Fans will be included and 1 heatsink. If you are upgrading the fans or the heatsink, please factor this in.
GPU / Workload AcceleratorFor 1 GPU you can install the card in Slot 1 of the primary riser and use this HPE DL360 Gen9 GPU Cable for CPU1 Kit (766199-B21) to power the GPU. If 2 cards are installed, then HPE DL360 Gen9 2P PCIe GPU Enablement Kit (867249-B21) is required. If this kit is installed, you will need a second processor. The GPU Enablement kit can support more than one Full Height/GPU card and includes 2 GPU power cables and a bracket; when this GPU Enablement kit is installed the Low Profile PCIe3.0 Slot 2 on the primary riser is not useable. You don’t need the CPU1 Cable kit since the GPU enablement kit comes with both cables.
Flex Slot your power!
All power supplies must be of the same input voltage, output rating, and efficiency rating. If non-matching power supplies are installed, you may receive an error message and/experience operational issues with your server. Mixing different power supplies in the same server may limit or disable some power supply features including support for power redundancy. To ensure access to all available features, all power supplies within the same server should have the same output and efficiency ratings. With the ability of add two GPUs or install high-powered fans and processors, you will need to make sure you have enough power to manage your system.
