Base Knowledge
The HPE DL160 Rack Server supports up to 2 Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 or v4 Processors, mixing processors is not supported. The DL160 can accommodate up to 8 DIMMs per processor operating at speeds ranging from 1866MHz to 2400 MHz. The memory speed is determined by the CPU max memory speed. DDR4 Registered and Load Reduced Memory are supported, with maximum memory capacities varying depending on the type of memory installed. Mixing of memory types is not supported.
- Maximum Capacity 1TB (16 x 64GB LRDIMM @2400MHz)
- Maximum Capacity 512GB (16 x 32GB RDIMM @2400MHz)
You have the option to upgrade the server's system networking capabilities from the HPE Embedded Dual 1Gb Port 361i Network Interface Adapter to a FlexibleLOM card with the FlexibleLOM riser (781844-B21), which increases the data transfer rate from 1GB to 10GB. A minimum of two Gigabytes (2 GB) of server memory is required per adapter for 10Gb adapters. Additionally, there are options available for QDR/FDR InfiniBand Networking cards, Host Bust Adapters, and Converged Network Adapters. The correct riser slot for these adapters can be found by looking below at the pci riser section.
The DL160 HPE Rack server comes in three different chassis:
- 754522-B21 - Non-Hot-Plug 4 LFF Drives.
- 754521-B21 - Hot-Plug 4 LFF Drives.
- 754520-B21 - Hot-Plug 8 SFF Drives.
Each chassis comes with the HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i installed on the system board that supports up to 8 SATA drives. If you wish to add up to 8 SAS drives at 12Gb to the server, you must choose the H240 HBA (726907-B21) or the P440 Smart Array (726821-B21 - 820834-B21). If you choose the P440, please remember to also select the HP 96W Smart Storage Battery with 145mm Cable (727258-B21) for the Flash Back Write Cache (FBWC) to work on the performance smart arrays.
Each of these controllers has different cable kits for each chassis. NHP server chassis includes SATA cables required to connect drives. So, you will only need to select these cables if you choose the Hot-Plug chassis. The naming of the cable kits should be enough to understand which one you need for each controller and chassis combination. The correct riser slot for these adapters can be found by looking below.
The H240 and the P440 can only be installed on the low profile slot 2. While the H241 and the P441 can be installed on every slot.
Maximum Internal Storage
- Non Hot Plug LFF SATA 16TB 4 x 4TB
- Hot Plug LFF SAS 0TB 4 x 10TB
- Hot Plug LFF SATA 0TB 4 x 10TB
- Hot Plug LFF SATA SSD 36TB 4 x 3.84TB
- Hot Plug SFF SAS 0TB 8 x 2TB
- Hot Plug SFF SATA 0TB 8 x 2TB
- Hot Plug SFF SAS SSD 72TB 8 x 3.84TB
- Hot Plug SFF SATA SSD 72TB 8 x 3.84TB
M.2
If you wish to install M.2 drives on this server, you should note that it will occupy a PCIe slot. To install, select the HPE Universal SATA HHHL M.2 Kit (878783-B21) and choose either one or two M.2 SSD Drives. You also have the option to select a kit that includes the riser and card in a single or dual configuration. When installing the riser, please ensure that you choose the HPE SATA M.2 Cable Kit (866456-B21) and use one cable kit per M.2 SSD. Be sure to look up the correct riser slot for the M.2 card.
PCI Risers
The DL160 Rack Server supports up to 3 PCIe slots with a 2 Socket configuration. Only two types of risers can be installed at any one time. Slots 1 and 2 have two options for risers while slot 3 has only 1 riser option. Below is the PCIe riser breakdown.

GPU / Workload Accelerator
Is this system going to be used in High-performance-computing (HPC)? The ability to add a Workload Accelerator will greatly improve the performance of the server for data centers or memory-intensive tasks. Please take note of what size PCIe slot you will need for each card. The slots are limited to 3 and can fill up fast.
Let’s talk power!
You have 2 options really for power like most DL Gen9 HPE rack servers. The non-hot-plug 550W Power Supply kit ( 730941-B21 ) or the 900W Redundant power supply ( 775595-B21 ). If you plan to install a Workload Accelerator or high-wattage CPUs. It is recommended to install the Redundant Power Supply (RPS) Kit.
When installing the 900W Power Input Module you can either buy the Input Module and the required backplane separately or in a kit ( 820792-B21 ). The Kit comes with (2) 900W Power Input Modules for Redundancy.
Mixing of power supplies is not supported.
Other Information
For SFF Chassis only, there is the ability to add a USB 3.0 port to the front of the server with the HP DL160 Gen9 Front USB 3.0 Enablement Kit (725594-B21 ).
When installing the Security Bezel (664918-B21 ) you will also need the HP DL160 Gen9 Quick Release Ear FIO Kit (774609-B21 )
The DL160 HPE Rack server has the option for a Dedicated iLO Management Port Kit (725581-B2 ).
