Flexible Design

HPE DL385 Gen10 Base Knowledge
The DL385 Gen10 Rack Server By HPE is a 2 Socket system supporting the 2nd Gen AMD Processors. Mixing of 2 different processor models is NOT allowed. Any processors with greater than 180W will ship with the High-Performance heatsink (P19368-B21). Any processors with greater than 180W will require the High-Performance fan kit (867810-B21). If you’re planning on installing a GPU make sure the Processor is below 166W. All the GPU options are not supported with 166W or higher Processors

With up to 32DIMMS on a two-socket configuration. The DL385 can support 16 DIMM slots per processor, 8 channels per processor, and 2 DIMMs per channel. Mixing RDIMM and LRDIMM memory is not supported along with Mixing of x4 & x8 memory is not allowed.

The DL385 Gen10 System Board has 2 embedded M.2 Slots. All models come with the S100i Smart Array Controller with embedded software RAID support for the 2 M.2 drive connectors on the system board. HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 SW RAID will operate in UEFI mode only and is off by default and must be enabled. You will have many other options for RAID controllers including the Type-A (AROC) Smart Array controllers that can be paired with the 12Gb SAS Expander (870549-B21) that can hold up to 24 Drives. This SAS Expander must be installed in the primary riser slot 3.

Chassis Types

  • 8 SFF with optional Universal Media Bay, and optional SFF or NVMe drive bay options
  • 24 SFF bay with an additional 6SFF rear drive bay option to a total of 30 SFF drives
  • 8 LFF with Universal Media Bay and with optional 4 LFF mid-plane and optional 3LFF + 2 SFF rear drive bay
  • 12 LFF with optional 4 LFF mid-plane and optional 3LFF + 2 SFF rear drive bay to total 19 LFF drives + 2 SFF drives

The 8 and 12 LFF chassis also supports the 2 SFF rear drive box which allows for the user to attach a secondary or tertiary riser. The 4LFF Mid-plane and the 3LFF rear drive cage riser are for LFF Chassis only.

8 LFF CHASSIS
The 8LFF Chassis can not be upgraded to the FRONT 12LFF but it can install the 4LFF Midplane along with rear drives to support 12LFF or more drives. The 8LFF Chassis has the Media Bay already installed in the top Drive Bay. This comes with an ODD and the option for 2SFF Drives to be installed on the front of the server. Either SAS/SATA or NVMe drives with the proper Drive Cage, Cables, and Risers are supported.

12 LFF CHASSIS
The 12LFF Chassis has no FRONT drive upgrade options, but it does have the ability to install more drive in the rear of the server and internally with the 4LFF Mid Tray drive upgrade. The 12LFF does not support any GPU installations.

8SFF Chassis
The 8SFF Chassis, like in the DL380 has the most upgrade options. This system can go from 8 drives to 24 drives in the front. It is recommended if you plan to install a 24 SAS or SATA drive, that you choose the 24 Bay Chassis rather than upgrading this chassis to meet your required drive amount. This chassis can hold NVMe drives up to 24 on the front drive bays. NVMe drives are not supported in the rear of the drive. Box 3 is filled by default with 8SFF SAS/SATA Drives, when trying to install 24 NVMe drives you will first need to remove the Default drive cage and replace it (873763-B21) with the 8SFF NVMe drive cage (826689-B21).

Here is what the 24SFF NVMe configuration needs. If BOX 1, 2, and 3 are populated for full 24-drive NVMe support this requires 3 risers (1st 867807-B21, 2nd 873732-B21, & 3rd 867808-B21) and the onboard NVMe connections with 2x NVMe cable (871827-B21). There are limitations on GPU support with the NVMe bay installed since a lot of the risers are taken up by NVMe slots. Supporting 24 NMVe limits I/O support to the ALOM slot. To achieve max 24 NVMe support, connect 8 NVMe drives to both the primary and secondary risers, 4 NVMe drives to the tertiary riser, and 4 NVMe drives to the onboard connectors.

The SFF Chassis does not have any options for internal drives to be installed. The 8SFF Chassis also can support the Universal Media Bay with the option of installing either an ODD, 2SFF drives, or both.


24SFF Chassis
The 24SFF Chassis has all 3 Boxes filled and come with 6 High-Performance Fans. This system can only support rear drive upgrades and PCIe cards. This chassis comes with the 12G SAS Expander installed in slot 3 of the primary riser.

HPE Smart Storage Controllers
All models come with the S100i Smart Array Controller with embedded software RAID support for the 2 M.2 drive connectors on the system board. Each system can support the Type-A Array RAID on Chip (AROC) Smart Array controllers. By installing an AROC controller you will be saving a PCIe slot. There are also options for the Stand-up PCIe controllers, if they are the performance controllers you will need an energy pack to support them. A minimum of two Gigabytes (2 GB) of server memory is required per adapter.

HPE DL385 Gen10 Plus GPU / Workload Accelerator
There are limitations on GPU support with the NVMe bay installed. None of the GPUs are supported on 12 LFF chassis and all of them require a High-Performance Fan Kit (867810-B21) and a High-Performance Heat sink (882098-B21). Max Qty of a Doublewide GPU is 1 per riser. Please the Spec Manual for more details about each GPU supported.

Networking Abilities | FlexibleLOM, Stand-up card
These CTO Rack Servers do not come with the 4x1GB embedded LOM on the system board. You will need to install a FlexibleLOM or a Stand-up PCIe card. There are many to choose from and the DL385 can support up to a 1-port 200GB InfiniBand adapter.

HPE DL385 Gen10 Plus ,Cooling
All CTO servers are Energy Star 2.1 compliant. Depending on the chassis or parts installed the Fan kits will be different. By default, the 12LFF and 24LFF come with 6 high-performance fans, and the 8LFF Chassis comes with 6 standard fans. The last chassis the 8SFF, comes with 4 Standard fans on a 1P configuration and 6 standard fans on a 2P configuration.

The 12 LFF and 24 SFF chassis ship with 6 High-performance fans as standard. The 8LFF chassis ships with 6 standard fans by default. The High-performance fan kits are required for rear drives, Graphics (GPU) cards, 180w Processors SKUs, or NVMe configurations. 1P models ship with 4 standard fans. The second processor option kit contains 2 additional fans for a total of 6 standard fans on a 2P 8SFF Chassis.

The high-Performance fan kit consists of 6 fans and will fill all the fan cages. HPE DL38X Gen10 High-Performance Temperature Fan Kit (867810-B21) is required to support GPU configurations, NVMe configurations, rear drives, and if all Boxes 1, 2, and 3 are populated.

There are 2 different High-Performance Heatsinks kits. Both Heatsink kits - 882098-B21 & P19368-B21 cannot be selected together. There is a 1U High-Performance and 2U High-Performance heatsinks. The 1U High-Performance Heat Sink Kit (P19368-B21) is required for processors above 126W and when 4LFF mid-plane carrier kit (882096-B21) is selected. The second heatsink, the other High-Performance Heatsink Kit (882098-B21) is required for GPU installations and processors above 180W.

This system board has 2 dedicated slots for M.2 drives that are supported by the embedded S100i SW RAID. The system also has the option to install the HPE Universal SATA 6G AIC HHHL M.2 SSD Enablement Kit (878783-B21). The last M.2 support is with the uFF drives that are supported on select drive cage upgrades.

The 12LFF Chassis is the only CTO that comes standard with the P816i-a Controller and cable.

All AMD EPYC processors can support up to 2TB of memory each.

4x 1 embedded LOM is not equipped on new boards for 7xx2 series processor

HPE Server UEFI/legacy ROM 8
UEFI is an industry standard that provides better manageability and more secured configuration than the legacy ROM while interacting with users server at boot time. HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers have a UEFI Class 2 implementation and support both UEFI Mode (Default) and legacy BIOS mode.

One Config Simple (SCE)
SCE is a guided Self-Service tool to help sales and Non-Technical people provide end users with initial configurations in 3 to 5 minutes. Then send the configuration on for configuration help, or use in the existing ordering processes. If user require custom rack configuration or configuration for products not available in SCE, contact Hewlett Packard Enterprise end user business center or an authorized partner for assistance
  1. The 3 LFF rear drive box will consume space for the secondary and tertiary riser
    • The 8 and 12 LFF chassis also supports the 2 SFF rear drive box which allows for the user to attach a secondary or tertiary riser.
    • The 8 NVMe drive option (826689-B21) can only be leveraged in the SFF chassis and replaces Box 1, 2 or 3.
    • The premium cage (826690-B21, 6 SAS/SATA+2 NVMe) can only be leveraged in the SFF chassis and replaces Box 1, 2 or 3.
    • The universal media bay (882097-B21) not available with the LFF chassis or the 24 SFF front end, and can only be populated in Box 1.
    • The 8 SFF can be upgraded with additional 8SFF drive box to total 16 or 24 SFF drives. For optimal upgrade Box 2 should be populated second, with Box 1 the last to be populated for a field upgrade to 24 SFF. For Configure-To-Order (CTO) builds requiring 24 SFF use the 24 SFF chassis (868704-B21). Note a field upgrade to 24 SFF will require a high performance fan kit (867810-B21).
    • All models come with the S100i Smart Array controller with embedded software RAID support for the 2 embedded M.2 drive connectors on the system board.
  2. 1P models ship with 4 standard fans. The second processor option kit contains 2 additional fans
    • The 12 LFF and 24 SFF chassis ship with 6 high performance fans as standard.
    • The 8LFF chassis ships with 6 standard fans as standard.
    • High performance fan kit is available to meet ambient temperature environments.
    • High performance fan kits are required for rear drives, graphics card or NVMe configurations.

    • All AMD EPYC processors can support up to 2TB of memory each.
  4. The maximum memory speed is limited by the processor selection
    • Mixing of RDIMM and LRDIMM memory is not supported.
    • 128GB support is available 1H2018
  5. Bus width Indicates the number of physical electrical lanes running to the connector.
  6. Performance RAID Controllers require the HPE Smart storage battery (P01366-B21) which is sold separately.
  7. The Micro SD slot is not a Hot-Pluggable device. End users should not attempt to plug an SD card into the SD slot while the server is powered.
    • Not shipping as standard. Available as a CTO option or as a field upgrade (826703-B21).
  8. The UEFI system utilities tool is analogous to the HPE ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) of legacy BIOS

Express Computer Systems (ECS) provides a 1 year parts warranty against defects in material or workmanship that will affect the products functionality. All refurbished items are tested prior to shipping to guarantee up-time upon arrival. If you are having issues with an item we provided please Contact Us and we will do our best to assist you.

What does our ECS warranty cover?
We offer 1 year warranty as standard and additional years can be added to fit your needs. Please reach out to a sales associate via the Contact Us page or live chat for more information on extended coverage options. During the coverage period if your product fails we will offer a Next Business Day replacement. If we are unable to replace the product we will refund its original selling price. Shipping costs and tax are not refundable. Express Computer Systems retains the right to decide whether the goods will be replaced or refunded.

What is not covered by our warranty?
Our warranty does not cover any problem caused by the following conditions:

  1. accidents; misuse; carelessness; electrostatic discharge; shock; temperature or humidity beyond the specifications of the product; improper installation; operation; modification;
  2. any improper use that contravenes the instructions in the user manual;
  3. problems caused by other equipment. Our warranty is void if the product is returned with damaged, removed, counterfeit labels, or any modifications (including any component or external cover removal). Our warranties do not cover data loss or damages to any other equipment. In addition, our warranties do not cover incidental damages, consequential damages, or costs related to data recovery, removal, and installation.

Important notes:

  • Please ask for additional warranty/coverage that you may require in addition to the standard 1 ECS warranty prior to final purchase. Requesting additional warranty after your purchase can be denied.
