GPU Card installation guidelines

The Dell PowerEdge R7424 can hold up to 3 DW GPUs. There are some rules and extra parts you will need if you plan to install any GPUs into the system. The guidelines below will help you understand what is needed to successfully install the GPUs into your Rack Server.

Likewise if you plan to remove any GPUs from the system. Please read the manual to ensure the correct Air Filters and Air Shrouds are installed. By doing this you will maintain the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification of the system.

This is an image of 3 GPUs being installed into the R7425 Rack Server

Guidelines:
  • Ensure that both the processors are installed.
  • The processor must use a GPU kit 1U high-performance heat sink module.
  • To ensure adequate cooling when one or more GPUs are installed, the ambient inlet temperature is restricted to 30°C for CPU 200 W/180 W, 170 W/150 W, and 120 W. For more information, see the ambient temperature limitations section.
  • Ensure that the GPU enablement kit is available.
  • All GPUs must be of the same type and model.
  • You can install up to three double-wide or six single-wide GPUs.
  • The filler bracket on the GPU air shroud must be removed before installing the GPU.
  • Ensure that high-performance fans, and GPU air shroud are installed.
  • NOTE: When using systems with GPU, ensure that you install PSUs with 1100 W or higher, and set the PSU configuration to nonredundant mode.
The GPU enablement kit includes:
  • 1. GPU air shroud (1)
  • 2. Mylar foam (1)
  • 3. Riser 3A for DW GPGPU (1), Riser 3B for SW GPGPU (1)
  • 4. GPU external power cable for Riser 3A (DW GPU only) (1)
  • 5. GPU external power cable for Riser 2A and Riser 2E (DW GPU only) (1)
  • 6. Riser 2A or 2E for DW GPGPU (1), Riser 2D for SW GPGPU (1)
  • 7. Riser 1A for DW GPGPU (1), Riser 1E for SW GPGPU (1)
  • 8. GPU external power cable for Riser 1A (DW GPU only) (1)
  • 9. 1U high-performance heat sink modules (2)
  • 10. High-performance cooling fans (6)
  • 11. PCIe cable for Riser 3B (SW GPU only) (1)
